GIPF is a strategic abstract game designed for two players, based on a classical mechanic: players alternate turns by introducing pieces into play with the objective of forming four-in-a-row. Once a row of four is achieved, the involved pieces are removed, and any of the opponent’s pieces extending that row are also captured. This capturing mechanic continuously alters the state of the game, creating dynamic situations on the board. The primary goal is to create successive lines of at least four pieces, until the opponent has no remaining pieces to introduce or no GIPF-pieces left on the board.

The victory conditions are straightforward: the first player to leave their opponent without any remaining reserve pieces or GIPF-pieces on the board wins. It is thus crucial to maintain at least one piece in reserve and at least one GIPF-piece on the board at all times.

Each player begins with 18 reserve pieces, which are unplaced tokens of their color. A GIPF-piece consists of two stacked pieces, functioning as a single unit. The playing surface comprises a pattern of 37 spots (intersections), with 24 external dots serving as placement indicators—these do not participate directly in gameplay but facilitate piece placement before they are introduced onto the main board. The active play area consists of these intersections, connected by lines indicating permissible movement directions.

The initial move mandates placing a GIPF-piece. The starting player, Yellow, begins by selecting a GIPF-piece from reserve and positioning it onto any black dot within reach. With this move, two stacked pieces (a GIPF-piece) are moved together onto an adjacent spot via a single action. Players may only move one space at a time during their turns.

Subsequent turns alternate between players. The opponent, indicated by a red disk, executes similar moves—dragging a double (GIPF) piece onto an empty black dot and then pushing it onto an adjacent spot.

Players can introduce subsequent pieces either into empty spots or by pushing already occupied pieces along their line of connection—if a pushed piece encounters an occupied spot further along, it continues to slide or be pushed further accordingly.

During gameplay, both players may add multiple GIPF-pieces initially. After the first move, each insertion can be chosen to be either a double (GIPF) or a single piece; however, once a single piece is introduced, all future moves will involve only single-piece insertions. When learning the game, it is advisable to start with 3 or 4 GIPF-pieces to manage complexity.

Two key restrictions apply:
<ul>
<li>A piece already on the board cannot be moved independently—only through insertion of new pieces that push existing ones. All in-play pieces may be pushed during turns by either player, regardless of color or whether they are GIPF or single pieces.</li>
<li>If all spots along a line are occupied, it's forbidden to insert new pieces in that direction—doing so would push a piece out of bounds at the opposite end, which is not permitted.</li>
</ul>

Capturing is triggered when four adjacent single pieces of the same color align (Dots outside these four do not count). These four are removed from the board, and any directly extending same-color pieces along that line are also captured and returned to reserves; opponent's captured pieces are permanently removed from play. Notably, GIPF-pieces are automatically removed upon such captures; however, players have discretion over whether to remove or retain their own GIPF-pieces.

The game concludes under two conditions: either one player captures their opponent's last GIPF-piece or reduces their opponent’s reserve to zero. The player who achieves either condition wins the game, having effectively limited their opponent’s options beyond recovery.
